What is Yin Yoga?

Yin Yoga is a practice of letting go, a quiet place to allow the body to gently release, provide more fluidity and movement and create stillness in the mind.

Yin Yoga involves gently and slowly coming into a shape to a level where you feel inevitable discomfort but not risky pain, relaxing into this shape and staying there for several minutes to allow the fascia to release.

Yin Yoga is a meditative practice a way to reconnect to ones self and a practice of surrendering.

Why would you practice Yin Yoga?

There are so many benefits to practicing Yin Yoga on a physical, emotional, and energetic level.

  • Yin practice activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps reduce stress and tension.
  • Yin increases our chi/energy flow throughout the body and improves our overall wellbeing.
  • Practicing Yin and holding shapes can help us to learn to adapt to our outside environment with more ease and less judgmental attitudes.
  • Yin is a place we can go within which in turn leads to clarity of thought and concentration of the mind and an overall sense of peace and compassion for self and others.
  • On a physical level Yin shapes allow us to increase fluidity to our connective tissue allowing more space in the body, and mind.

FAQs about Yin Yoga Classes

On arrival you will be asked to complete a waiver form and for everyone’s protection we will be asking you screening questions in relation to COVID and taking your temperature.

It is ideal to arrive to class approx. 10 mins before start time to enable paperwork to be completed and to discuss any injuries or restrictions you may be working with and to settle into your space.

Yin yoga is mostly a floor based practice and follows three principles;

The first involves gently and slowly coming into a shape to a level where you feel inevitable discomfort but not risky pain, like a deep stretch.

The second is becoming still and soft here and surrendering to the experience.

The third is to stay in this shape for several mins to allow the fascia and the deep tissues in our bodies to become hydrated which allows more movement within our joints and spine whilst at the same time giving our mind the space and time to deeply rest.

Absolutely. There will be options for all poses.

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely into the poses. There is no need to wear fancy yoga pants but by all means wear these if you have them.

Preferably yes but as we will be practicing mostly on the floor and this is carpeted then a towel would be adequate to begin. Unfortunately due to COVID we are unable to provide shared yoga mats.

Definitely not. The poses that we come into in Yin Yoga allow you to slowly and mindfully release into the deep connective tissue in the body, the fascia. We hold the poses for a period of 3 – 5 mins to allow more fluidity around our joints and ligaments, which naturally leads to a lengthening and more flexibility.

Yin yoga is more about toning one’s mind than toning one’s body.

Yin Yoga itself is not designed as a weight loss method but as we practice in a place of stillness we learn to become more in tune with our bodies, our habits and patterns of behaviour that may lead to weight gain and through this awareness we can change these habits.

8 people to allow for COVID spacing

It is always advisable to discuss this with your GP if you have any health concerns that you may be concerned about. There are some Yin poses that are not suitable for certain conditions but there are always options given in each and every pose.
