It’s Movember – Men’s Health Awareness.

What is Movember all about?

Movember is the charity tackling prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Movember aims to raise funds and awareness for all the dads, brothers, sons and mates in your life.

What can you do to help?

Grow – No matter the shape or style of your ‘mo’ this Movember, your face can inspire donations, conversations and real change!

Move – Commit to walking or running 60 kilometres over the month. That’s 60 kilometres for the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour.

Host – Raise funds by doing what you already enjoy. Get your mates together for a Mo-ment.

Prostate Cancer

Early detection can make the difference between life and death when it comes to prostrate cancer survival rates. We urge all men 45 years or older to talk to your GP about your prostrate health and PSA testing. A PSA test is a simple blood test. It is the primary method of testing for prostrate cancer and measures the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) concentration in the blood.

Signs and symptoms of Prostrate Cancer:

  • A need to urinate frequently, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine
  • Weak or interrupted flow of urine
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Difficulty in having an erection
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs

Not every man experiences these symptoms and many prostrate cancers are first picked up by the doctor during a routine check.

Mental Health

75% of all suicides are men. The best way to help men with mental health issues is to talk, ask, listen, encourage action and check in. Remember, to speak with someone immediately, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467. If life is in danger, call 000 or go directly to emergency services.

If you or a loved male need a health check, please call Northside Health on 02 6652 5322.
